A Community Comes Together

Gift of Literacy Campaign Kickoff Reception celebrates local support of Books Are Wings.

On November 21st, guests gathered in support of the kickoff of the Annual Gift of Literacy Campaign at Machines with Magnets in Pawtucket. The gallery space was perfect for staff, volunteers and guests to get to know each other and learn more about the ongoing work of Books Are Wings. 100 people attended, and the Campaign has raised $11,290 with the support of our amazing community.

The Annual Gift of Literacy Campaign runs from November 21st through December 31st and the kickoff event was the perfect setting to launch this important fundraising initiative. This campaign will provide funding for Books Are Wings’ core mission of putting free books in the hands of children. We believe that every child in Rhode Island deserves access to books in their home and to be excited about books and reading.

Guests mingled in the unique venue space of Machines with Magnets, sipping handmade cocktails and eating a delicious spread courtesy of Fireworks Catering. Everyone enjoyed a slideshow of Books Are Wings community events and a poster series featuring some of the core tenets of the organization. Using the digital platform Give Lively, and offering a raffle for some amazing donated prizes, the community generously supported the campaign throughout the evening.

Mayor Grebien of Pawtucket joined the event and presented Executive Director Jocelynn White with a proclamation honoring the start of the campaign. He spoke of the importance of community and the impact that the books BAW puts into the community have had on the children of Pawtucket.

Books Are Wings could not continue this critical work of building the libraries of children who might not otherwise have books at home without your support. We are deeply humbled by and grateful for the generosity of our supporters and looking forwards to continuing and expanding our programs in 2020.
