May is Get Caught Reading Month, and we’re asking you to share the moments when you’re reading! With schools closed for in person learning through this school year, one of the most important things you can do as a family is read together! Whether you read a book first thing in the morning, on your own, or for a bedtime wind-down activity, we want to see what you’re reading. Tag us at #bawgetscaughtreading!
Every Child A Reader, the nonprofit that fund the May campaign shares: “Get Caught Reading is a nationwide campaign to promote the fun of reading books for all ages. Launched in 1999 by the Association of American Publishers and now managed by Every Child a Reader with support from the Lois Lenski Covey Foundation, Get Caught Reading provides teachers and librarians with smallposters of TV and sports stars, authors, and beloved book characters reading a book. Recent posters feature wonderful role models from recent USA Olympic teams.”
“Because of research indicating that early language experience actually stimulates a child’s brain to grow and that reading to children gives them a huge advantage when they start school, we hope to encourage people of all ages to enjoy books and magazines and to share that pleasure with the young children in their lives.” Just like the Get Caught Reading movement, Books Are Wings believes that early and frequent access to books is critical to a child’s development.
Below are some fun ways to celebrate Get Caught Reading Month:
1. Start a Zoom Book Club: Pick a book that you and several other friend have, and discuss it over a zoom or phone call.
2. Design a Bookmark: Using a piece of construction paper, create your own bookmark with quotes from your favorite book or author.
3. Read Outside. No matter what you’re reading, take your book to your favorite outdoor spot. With school focused on the computer right now, it’s good to get some fresh air everyday.
4. Make Your Own Book. Write a story that interests you: it can be true or made up. Design your own book covers and share your book with your family.
5. Find a LFL. Take a walk around your neighborhood and see if you can find a Little Free Library. Take a book and make sure you leave it a sealed bag for three days after!
